The start of this season was a strange one for the Reds. Jürgen Klopp’s men won every game until mid October but were struggling to keep clean sheets, a stat that made no sense given that the Reds were impenetrable last season. The tide has changed now, Liverpool have kept a clean sheet in five consecutive games for the first time since 2007. With Fabinho returning soon Alisson Becker could still win the Golden Glove.
The Anfield goalie is the current holder of the Premier League Golden Glove, having kept the opposition out on 21 occasions in the 2018/19 season.
At the minute Ali is three behind Kasper Schmeichel in the Golden Glove standings. The Brazilian has registered five shutouts in comparison to the Dane’s eight. Although, the Foxes keeper has played 21 games in comparison to Alisson’s 12. If the pair carry on at their current rate then surely the Reds’ number one will win out.
The uptake in clean sheets can be attributed to two things: the return of Joe Gomez and the settling of the defence. At the start of the season we saw the Reds back five chopped and changed regularly due to injury; Alisson was ruled out during the first game of the season whilst Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren suffered injuries of their own in subsequent months.
We have now managed to put out the same defence for a month or so and the benefits are clear – we are keeping teams out. It is important to remember though that we are not even at our full strength defensively – the return of Fabinho could really shoot Alisson Becker up the Golden Glove standings.
The Reds have been dominating recent games, who knows how well the Reds will go on to perform when we have our Brazilian defensive midfielder back? The one thing we can bank on is that it will be even harder for the opposition to breakthrough.
