Transfer fees have gotten crazy in recent seasons, clubs (particularly those in the Premier League) are paying through the nose for top talents as the riches that come with success on the pitch grow ever greater. Grabbing a free signing in this market can save a club millions and millions. Despite this big saving, Liverpool shouldn’t sign Mario Gotze on a free in the summer.
According to Bild in Germany, Gotze has decided not to renew his contract with Borussia Dortmund. The German international rose to prominence at Dortmund before joining Bayern Munich for three seasons. After winning the title three times in a row with Bayern, Gotze returned to Dortmund on a four year deal.
The attacking midfielder’s career has been hampered by illness in recent years – a metabolic issue has seen him in and out of the side at Bayern and at Dortmund. With his health in question, the club allegedly offered him a pay decrease if he wanted to stay at the club – a decrease that the German turned down, meaning he can leave on a free at the end of the season.
What RTK has to say
Liverpool signing Mario Gotze has been rumoured for years. The 27-year-old worked with Jürgen Klopp at Dortmund and many have begged the pair to reunite at Anfield.
However, the last thing that the club needs is to bring in another player on big wages that spends more time in the treatment room than they do on the pitch.
We have only just gotten rid of Daniel Sturridge and are set to offload Adam Lallana at the end of the season, we don’t need to shell out even more money on a player that we cannot guarantee the fitness of.
