Last weekend saw the Reds absolutely humiliate their local rivals. Liverpool beat Everton 1-0 in the Merseyside Derby, or more accurately, Liverpool’s kids beat Everton 1-0 in the Merseyside Derby. One of the stars of the show may be rewarded for his remarkable performance, Sky Sports have suggested that Liverpool may give Pedro Chirivella a new contract at Anfield.

The 22-year-old midfielder has cut a forgotten figure at Anfield in recent years, he has only made one Premier League appearance since joining the Reds from Valencia’s academy in 2013.

Sky Sports’ report states that whilst Jürgen Klopp is aware that the youngster wants first team action, Liverpool have been sufficiently impressed to consider giving Pedro Chirivella a new contract.

What RTK has to say

Despite his failure to threaten a breakthrough into the first team, the Spaniard has demonstrated his undeniable technical attributes in recent performances.

The League Cup defeat against Aston Villa was a harsh reflection on the young Reds’ efforts, Pedro was particularly impressive in a team of spirited kids. However, it was against Everton that the 22-year-old really stood out.

Chirivella’s raking passing helped keep the tempo high and he displayed surprisingly high levels of anticipation and aggression which helped him dominate the Everton first team’s midfield.

If the Spaniard can play like that every week then Liverpool shouldn’t hesitate in giving Pedro Chirivella a new contract. We may be stacked with talent in midfield but when injuries pile up – as they have at the minute – we need players like Pedro to step into the first team to give a rest to the likes of Jordan Henderson.
