With the January transfer window nearing closer the amount of players linked with a move to the Reds is growing by the day. Jürgen Klopp has enjoyed great success in 2019 but he is undeniably stretched thin in key areas, the media have been speculating about which position will be strengthened first. According to L’Equipe, translated by The Mirror, Liverpool are chasing Mathieu Gonçalves of Toulouse.
The 18-year-old left back has already made his senior debut in the French Ligue 1; appearing against Paris Saint Germain in August – he has played three times since.
L’Equipe believe that Jürgen Klopp is lining the player up with one eye on the future, adding to the current influx of bright young talents at Anfield.
What RTK has to say
If Liverpool sign Mathieu Gonçalves he would likely be seen as the long term successor to Andy Robertson. We would also see a reduction in the minutes that James Milner plays at left back.

This would be a positive move for the Reds. Although we can’t claim to have studied the lads game, to be linked with full backs is precisely what we were hoping for.
Liverpool look comparatively impotent whenever we are forced to start without Andy Robertson or Trent Alexander-Arnold; the pair have become vital to our attacking exploits and when they are out of the side we struggle to adapt.
At the moment we don’t have any dedicated cover at full back, we are instead relying on selecting players out of position – namely Joe Gomez and James Milner. Adding depth would be a massive step forward.
