This weekend saw Liverpool extend their lead at the top of the table to 10 points. The Reds were far from their best as they beat Watford 2-0 at Anfield but beat Watford they did. In one of the 3pm kick offs we saw Leicester City drop points at home to struggling Norwich. The two results exposed the difference between Liverpool and Leicester City in the title race.
The Reds’ win over Watford should have been more convincing. A combination of poor refereeing and new manager bounce helped keep the tie interesting a lot longer than it should have been.
If the VAR had not inexplicably chalked off Sadio Mane’s second half header, the game would have had a completely different complexion come half time. With just a goal in it we saw Watford a lot braver in attack and a lot more spirited in defence than we would have expected.
Over at the King Power stadium it was a frustrating afternoon for Brendan Rodgers. His side couldn’t get past Daniel Farke’s Norwich and had to rely on a Tim Krul own goal to rescue a point. Such was the desperation for a win Kelechi Iheanacho controversially refused to return the ball after it was put out for an injury.
The difference between Liverpool and Leicester City in this title race is that the Reds can win ugly. We win when we aren’t at our best. Whereas the Foxes came up short against the Canaries. They just didn’t have that je ne sais quoi that Champions have.
With the lead now at 10 points, it would take the Reds losing four or drawing five for the Foxes to get a look in. If we keep winning the next game (however ugly), this could be a procession.
