Liverpool made it to the last 16 of the Champions League yet again on Tuesday night. The Reds journeyed to one of the toughest stadiums in the competition and beat the local title holders 2-0. RB Salzburg were fierce, ferocious and determined but they had one problem – they were playing Liverpool. The Mo Salah goal against Salzburg showed that we have to be patient with him.
Let’s open this with a mea culpa. We have been critical of Mo in recent weeks – in a loving way. We know that Salah is better than he has shown at times this season. We have never wanted him to be relegated from his first choice slot but we have suggested that a couple of weeks out of the side would benefit his fitness and in turn his form.
The forward has missed some opportunities that we simply don’t expect him to miss. He missed a host of them against the Austrians on Tuesday. However, the Mo Salah goal against Salzburg showed that class is permanent.
After rounding the keeper, Mo was left with an impossible angle to aim at the goal from, he somehow snuck the ball in, shaving the near post.
Throughout the tie we had grown frustrated with the Egyptian King; it was a must win game and he was missing glaring opportunities. He then, of course, netted the one that was barely even a chance.
We need to be patient with Mo. We need to understand that he is still getting into the right positions, sometimes strikers have an off game or two. We are as guilty as anybody for doubting the man – he gave us a stark reminder of his undeniable quality in Austria.
