Wednesday night saw Jürgen Klopp stun Kopites and pundits around the world with his team selection. The German gaffer was heading into the Merseyside Derby with five changes, dropping stars Roberto Firmino and Mo Salah. The boss was vindicated come full time, with his side running out 5-2 winners and each of his changes working. Xherdan Shaqiri proved that he will be vital for our December run.
Prior to our win over Everton, Shaqiri had played just 14 minutes of football this season. The diminutive Swiss midfielder had struggled to get a game at the start of the season owing to the sensational form of the first XI and he was ruled out with injury thereafter.
Now back to full fitness, he was able to start against Everton and he took his chance with aplomb. The creative player got on the ball regularly and used it well, easing past defenders and picking out teammates.
We must also mention his goal – Liverpool’s second. The former Stoke man ghosted in behind the defence and effortlessly stroked home from a Sadio Mane through ball.
As we head into the depths of December, the Reds are set to play a downright absurd amount of football. Our squad depth will be tested to the very limit and we will need to rotate regularly.
Xherdan Shaqiri will prove vital to us in December. There are few clubs in the Premier League that can call on a player of his undeniable quality to fill in as a backup option. When the games pile up, we can rely on Jed Shaqiri to turn it on when it matters.
Many were questioning the wisdom of leaving out Mo Salah in favour of the Swiss international but it paid off and it will continue to do so throughout the month as the boss seeks to keep Salah fighting fit for the rest of the season.
