Liverpool welcome Everton to Anfield on Wednesday. The Reds are top of the table by 11 points – a lead that could be cut if the Toffees fail to beat Leicester City today. The Ev find themselves a place above the relegation zone at the start of play on Sunday, with just two points separating them from the drop. With our talisman not in the best form and our local rivals equally as poor, Liverpool should start Xherdan Shaqiri over Mo Salah in the derby.
The Reds’ Swiss international has struggled for game time this season. The £13m signing from Stoke has managed just 14 minutes in all competitions so far this campaign. A combination of strong first team form in the opening weeks and a subsequent injury have kept the diminutive midfielder on the sidelines.
Mo Salah has struggled with injury himself this season. When facing Leicester at the start of October, the Egyptian King was forced off after a thuggish lunge by Hamza Choudhury. Our talismanic forward has clawed himself back since but has been inconsistent with his performances. After being rested against Crystal Palace last weekend, Salah has disappointed against both Napoli and Brighton – disappearing in both games.
If Liverpool start Xherdan Shaqiri over Mo Salah in the derby they can afford our star man more time to rest and recover both his form and fitness. Sometimes players just need a week out, it’s normal.
With our Stanley Park neighbours in one of their worst patches of recent memory, there has never been a better time to play them at Anfield. Shaq needs minutes, we can kill two birds with one stone by dropping Mo from the lineup.
