Our view: Trevor Sinclair should be pulled from air for Liverpool tweet

You daren’t ever insult the Liverpool fan base. Kopites are fiercely proud, you’d be wise to not insult them – at least not without taste. We can take a joke but you have to be sensible. Trevor Sinclair wasn’t sensible and he should be pulled from the air for his tasteless Liverpool tweet.

Tweeting in response to Manchester City’s 4-1 win over Burnley at Turf Moor, the pundit remarked “Bin dippers we’re coming for you”. The Tweet has since been deleted.

Convicted drink-driver Sinclair played 98 times for the Manchester side back when they were rubbish, he now appears on the screen and is heard on the radio. Although the insult he used is one that is often thrown around by brain dead fans, it is not something that you expect to see used by high profile media figures.

“Bin dippers” implies that Scousers rummage through bins for food, the insult takes aim at poverty on Merseyside. In the era of food banks and modern record highs of poverty throughout the UK, for Sinclair to use such language is disgusting.

Those in the media need to hold themselves to a higher standard than fans. If you have commentators and pundits making fun of the hungry and homeless then your average supporter will follow suit.

Trevor Sinclair joking about Liverpool poverty in his tweet shows the contempt that the rest of the country has for Merseyside. You simply would not get away with these comments if they were made about another community – a longstanding prejudice seems to have made us fair game.

Raphinha, Coutinho and Tielemans: The signings Liverpool could make this summer

Whilst the media and rival fans are poking fun at the disadvantaged, calling them bin dippers – we are taking food to donate at every away game. Trevor Sinclair should be pulled from the air for the foreseeable future or these attitudes will continue to fester. Poverty is a serious issue, Scouse fans are tackling it whilst Sinclair is making fun of it. Disgusting.
