Monday night was incredibly disappointing for Kopites. Reds around the world had their hearts set on Virgil van Dijk collecting the Ballon d’Or but the Dutchman was controversially pipped by Lionel Messi. However, there was some consolation for Liverpool fans as Alisson Becker picked up the inaugural Yachine Trophy.
France Football’s Yachine Trophy is an award for the best goalkeeper in the world. The gong is named after the famous Lev Yashin, the only goalkeeper to ever win the Ballon d’Or. The Russian was named the best in the world back in 1963.
The Brazilian was the only realistic winner for the award after the season that year that he had. In the last 12 months we have seen Alisson win: the Champions League, the Super Cup, the Copa America, the Premier League Golden Glove, the Copa America Golden Glove, the Champions League Golden Glove, UEFA Goalkeeper of the Year and FIFA Goalkeeper of the Year.
What RTK has to say
How times have changed. Alisson Becker winning the Yachine Trophy is further testament to the complete transformation that has happened at Liverpool in recent years.
In Kiev in 2018 it was evident that something special was happening, that Jürgen Klopp was building a team that was set to conquer everything in its path. There was one thing missing: a goalkeeper.
Until the arrival of Ali, we had to put up with the inconsistency of Simon Mignolet and the haplessness of Loris Karius. With the Brazilian in goal we are a completely different team to the one that was heartbroken in Kiev.
We expect Alisson to be between the sticks at Anfield for years to come, long may he reign. What a year, what a man.
