Liverpool should move for out-of-favour Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti
The 26-year-old has been playing second fiddle at the Nou Camp so far this season.
Gerard Pique and Clement Lenglet have been the preferred centre back partnership of Ernesto Valverde.
Umtiti seems to be losing patience after making just four appearances for the Spanish giants this season.
Speaking to SPORT, he said. “I’d love to end my career here at Barca but I’m young, right. I have time and I have to play, play, play and win titles.”
The French international has clear message to his current team which basically reads play me or lose me. Liverpool should look to exploit this situation by launching a winter bid for Umtiti.
Joel Matip is out and showing no signs of returning to the first-team fold anytime soon.
Since then the Reds have been struggling in defence. Neither Dejan Lovren or Joe Gomez have proven to be capable of replacing the injured Cameroonian defender.
Liverpool are currently on our worst defensive run in over 20 years. Jürgen Klopp’s side have failed to keep a clean sheet for 11 consecutive games, a poor record last seen in the dark days of 1998.
Umtiti is a world class centre back who would come straight into our first team.
Manchester City will strengthen their back line in January and Liverpool must follow suit.
Otherwise we risk heading into the new year with our rivals significantly strengthened whilst we run the risk of losing more players to injury.
Samuel Umtiti is a great defensive option for now and years to come. Perhaps underappreciated at his current club Liverpool would be wise to test his loyalty by launching a bid during the winter window.
