The Liverpool defence is by no means as miserly as it was this time last season. The Reds have struggled to keep clean sheets this season, injuries to the rearguard have no doubt played their part in that. The latest Joel Matip injury update could be great news for Joe Gomez.
Speaking at Liverpool’s pre-match press conference – broadcast live on the club’s site – Jürgen Klopp offered a Joel Matip injury update, telling the press:
“Joel is improving but still some time away from the team…we will measure the improvement of the healing with a scan and from that moment on we can make decisions, it’s nothing you can rush.”
The Cameroonian was absent from late September until late October and hasn’t played since. Since the centre back took part in the Reds’ controversial draw with Manchester United, he has been sidelined by a knee injury.
What RTK has to say
It was during the winter period last season that Joe Gomez lost his place in the Liverpool side. Before a leg break against Burnley, the English defender had been one half of an impassable defensive partnership.
With games piling up for Jürgen Klopp in December, Gomez could find himself thrust back into the first team. Dejan Lovren has been the deputy of choice thus far but it is improbable that the Croatian can play each of the Reds’ games during the fixture build up.
The gaffer has commented before that momentum is key to team selection, it is momentum that helped Matip keep his place in the side when Gomez returned from injury. If the 22-year-old can put in a string of impressive performances during the winter period then he could assert himself as Jürgen’s first choice partner for Virgil van Dijk.
