Liverpool have been linked with a move for Timo Werner for months and months. Football expert Ian McGarry is one of the latest to report the interest. In his latest comments at a pre-match press conference, Timo Werner has shown that he would be a perfect fit at Anfield.
One Football reported the German striker’s media conference remarks. The 23-year-old told the press:
“Julian Nagelsmann said that I won’t be playing as an out and out striker but more of a false nine. It has encouraged me to improve and develop myself, even when we come up against opposition that sit deep. He has already helped me to make better use of space.”
What RTK has to say
One of the issues with Liverpool signing just any striker that is banging goals in is that we play in a particular way. Roberto Firmino is key to this particular way in which we play, the Brazilian can often be found dropping deep to receive the ball, asking questions of the defence as to whether or not they dare track him and leave space in behind.
Liverpool have long been linked with Timo Werner but he has typically been a forward that plays on the shoulder of the last man. This isn’t the way in which our formation operates.
With the German adapting his game to a more nuanced role that creates space for himself and in turn those around him, he would find the transition into the Reds attack a lot more seamless.
Liverpool must sign Timo Werner if he is available. The 23-year-old is the ideal fit for Jürgen Klopp. RB Leipzig play a similarly intense pressing game and the player himself is now maturing as a striker. We are desperate for rotation options up top, there are few better fits for the job than Timo Werner.
