Rumours that Liverpool are looking to sign Sander Berge from Genk are gathering pace, with Goal the latest to report the Reds’ interest. The Norwegian is an obvious talent, it is only natural that he has a long list of potential suitors. According to Goal, Chelsea have joined the race for the defensive midfielder.
Just 21-years-old and already boasting 20 caps for his country, Berge is gaining quite the reputation throughout Europe. The 6 foot 5 inch midfield enforcer has played every minute of his side’s Champions League campaign this season. Genk have picked up just one point in Group E, drawing with Napoli.
What RTK has to say
Despite interest from Chelsea, Liverpool must still be considered front runners for Sander Berge.
Domestically it has been far from sunshine and roses for the Belgian champions. Genk currently find themselves ninth in the league. With little success at home or abroad, there isn’t a huge motivation for the player to stay much longer. A January move is not out of the question and, given new regulations, he wouldn’t be cup tied.
If the Reds were to move for the Norwegian in January they could steal a march on the Blues – Chelsea’s transfer ban is not set to end until the summer. Frank Lampard’s side are trying to get their ban lifted in January.
Although Liverpool have the advantage with Sander Berge waxing lyrical over Anfield; Chelsea have their own boost in that they have a good track record with Genk. The West End club have dealt with the Belgians in the past, bringing in Kevin De Bruyne and Thibaut Courtois.
