This weekend sees Liverpool face Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. With Jürgen Klopp‘s men eight points clear at the top of the Premier League table, this is the ideal test of the Reds’ title credentials.
It is not an easy time for Kopites to think back to, Crystanbul. 2014. When Liverpool effectively lost the 2013/14 title after a collapse at Selhurst Park.
The game has been seared into the memory of Reds fans the world over. We only had ourselves to blame as we squandered a three goal lead, conceding three times in the final 11 minutes. The pendulum swung in favour of Manchester City and the title was lost.
The Eagles have been somewhat of a bogey team and the horror of 2014 is the most stark evidence of that. In recent seasons we have managed to banish those demons, having won each of our last four meetings. However, our last game was no cake walk, we needed all of our defiance and determination to secure a 4-3 win at Anfield.
It is also worth noting that Crystal Palace are the last side to win at Anfield in the Premier League. Way back in April 2017 when a Christian Benteke brace cancelled out Philippe Coutinho‘s opener.
Given the history between the sides and the dogged, defensive manner in which Roy Hodgson has set up his South London team, facing The Eagles is the ideal test of our title credentials. To win the Premier League you need character, you need determination and you need to be able to win ugly. Facing Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park demands all of these qualities from any side.
