Recent weeks have seen links emerging between Liverpool and Denis Zakaria, with Inside Futbol just one of a number of publications reporting the interest. The Swiss international currently plies his trade in the Borussia Monchengladbach midfield. The Reds have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of the enforcer due to comments made by the player’s agent to Sport Bild.
Zakaria has been in impressive form this season, notching two goals and an assist in his 11 appearances – an impressive tally for a defensive midfielder. Earlier this season Granit Xhaka told Sport Bild that his compatriot’s development has been “outstanding”.
Mathieu Beda told the German outlet, “Denis will not leave Borussia in the winter, a change is 100 percent excluded. Denis is in very good shape in Gladbach and has been playing really well for weeks, but he still has more potential and he wants to show that in Gladbach now instead of dealing with a change.”
What RTK has to say
It is no surprise that the player isn’t looking for a January move. Borussia Monchengladbach have had a remarkable start to the season, they currently sit top of the Bundesliga table with a four point cushion.
A fee of £43m has been mooted as the cost of prizing the Swiss midfielder from the German league leaders. Given his age and obvious potential, this could be a relative snip in the long term. He would provide Jürgen Klopp with complimentary partner to Fabinho, giving greater freedom to the likes of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
If Liverpool really want Denis Zakaria they won’t be deterred by these comments. The Reds have shown in recent seasons that they are willing to bide their time to secure their top targets: Naby Keita was bought a year in advance and Virgil van Dijk arrived after a protracted transfer saga.
