Kenny Cunningham this week made the bizarre decision to question Fabinho in the Liverpool midfield. The ex-Republic of Ireland captain has come in for heavy criticism for his comments.
Cunningham played in defence for Wimbledon for the majority of his career, he also had a spell at Birmingham. Throughout his career the Irishman showed a remarkable tendency for getting relegated. Speaking on the OTB AM podcast Cunningham said of Fabinho:
“I’m not totally convinced about him in that holding midfield position, we’re not arguing here if he’s a very good player or not, he is a very good player, but, as a purely defensive midfield player…you’ve got be able to sense danger, slide across the pitch, make tackles, track runners and I don’t think that’s the strongest part of his game.”
Considering the fact that many fans, players and pundits have joined in praising the Brazilian as the best defensive midfielder as the best in the world in his position. Against Spurs he was phenomenal, he kept the Reds attack ticking by spraying passes to the full backs and dinking balls over the Tottenham defence. Out of possession he kept Mauricio Pochettino’s side from gaining any ground in the Liverpool half.
Twitter has reacted to the bizarre Cunningham comments about Fabinho.
One supporter branded Cunningham clueless.
Hahaha – this Kenny Cunningham fella is absolutely clueless. Clearly doesn’t watch football & has never seen Fabinho play. Making stuff up as he goes along. What a clown 🤡 https://t.co/jIleJNId2g

Many fans questioned the Irishman’s credibility.
Ah the respected voice of Kenny Cunningham, who’s only major honour was getting a Championship medal in 2007.
Fabinho marked Messi out of the game Kenny.
Stick that in your pipe and smoke it. https://t.co/y0WhgG9SSa

Some excellent points on Fabinho’s weaknesses and how to be a defensive midfielder being made by *checks notes*…. Ireland’s Kenny Cunningham here.
Kenny Cunningham, of course, played at the highest level as a defender for *checks notes again*…. Wimbledon. https://t.co/XPowiAh051

Another supporter asserted that Cunningham isn’t qualified to comment on Fabinho just because they both play the sport.
Kenny Cunningham critiquing Fabinho is like me critiquing Valentino Rossi because we both ride R1’s https://t.co/hl20XyazeZ

One Kopite believes that the retired defender has a grudge with Fabby.
Cunningham always has had it in for Fabinho

Some fans were convinced that Cunningham hasn’t been watching Fabinho and urged him to watch one performance in particular.
Kenny Cunningham clearly hasn’t watched a single minute of Fabinho’s performances ever – he literally does ALL of those things 🤷🏻♂️😂😂#knobhead
