The Liverpool defence has been uncharacteristically leaky this season. The Reds have only registered two clean sheets in the league since August, though it is important to remember that Alisson Becker was absent for most of these games. At the minute, Jürgen Klopp’s first choice partner for Virgil van Dijk is injured. With Joel Matip set to be sidelined for a few weeks at least, Joe Gomez must start against Man City.
In recent weeks Klopp has opted for Dejan Lovren over Gomez. The Croatian World Cup finalist has been given the nod by Jürgen for the Reds recent ties with Genk, Aston Villa and Leicester City.
Against Genk, Liverpool were 4-0 up until Dejan Lovren conceded possession in the Reds defensive third, leading to the hosts only goal of the evening. Whilst he has been decent overall in his performances since returning to the starting lineup, he is still too error prone for this Liverpool side.
When the Reds face Man City on Sunday, they cannot afford any Lovren style errors. The defence will have to be at their brilliant best to keep out the irresistible Citizens’ attack.
Joe Gomez was looking every bit Van Dijk’s equal before the England defender had his leg broken by Ben Mee. Since recovering from his lengthy spell out, Gomez has been unable to break into the first XI due to the impeccable form of Joel Matip.
With Matip out for a number of weeks and Lovren still showing that he has an error in him, Joe Gomez must start against Man City. According to a report by 90Min, Gomez is growing frustrated with his lack of game time and is attracting attention from Arsenal. Now is the perfect time to give JoGo the minutes he deserves.
