Tuesday night sees Liverpool welcome Genk to Anfield in the Champions League. On Saturday, Man City visit Merseyside for the biggest game of the Premier League season so far. Speaking at his press conference ahead of the Reds tie with Genk, Jürgen Klopp exposed the difference in mentality between himself and Pep Guardiola.
On Saturday both Liverpool and Man City won late. The Reds were 1-0 down after 21 minutes at Villa Park but scored in the 87th and 94th minute to run out 2-1 winners. City were 1-0 down for most of the game before goals from Sergio Aguero and Kyle Walker secured three points for the champions.
Immediately after their late victory, Pep Guardiola was talking about Liverpool. The Spanish manager told the BBC, “sometimes it is diving, sometimes it is this talent to score incredible goals in the last minute.”
The former Barcelona gaffer was clearly trying to start the mind games ahead of his side’s visit to Anfield on Sunday. City facing Liverpool is a game certain to determine the Premier League champions this season. The Reds can draw nine points clear with a victory, or the Citizens can half the gap between themselves and Jürgen Klopp’s side.
Liverpool’s official YouTube channel broadcasted Klopp’s pre-match press conference. When asked about City, the German gaffer responded saying, “I don’t think about Man City, I don’t have to tell the boys. The story they wrote last 3 years is only possible cause we focus on the next game…For the people at Anfield, we need to focus on this match, same as the players. We don’t think about City, my players won’t do that.”

There is a stark contrast between the mentality of Jürgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola. The Spaniard has resorted to desperate mind games ahead of the crunch clash whilst the German has remained stoic and unmoved, unwilling to engage in the mud slinging. The fact that Pep has to try and get in his rivals’ heads shows that he is worried about his side’s chances this season.
