It is a transfer saga-cum-conspiracy set to rumble on for the foreseeable future: #Mbappe2020. Last summer Reds went into meltdown convincing themselves that Kylian Mbappe – valued at £180m by Transfermarkt – was on his way to Anfield. There were meetings, coincidences, FIFA preferences, the lot, all being thrown into the cauldron in order to conjure a move for the brightest young talent in world football. Liverpool have recently been cleared to sign a record breaking kit deal with sportswear giants Nike and the business deal has only added fuel to the French fire. The question is, if Liverpool sign Kylian Mbappe, where would he play?
The Liverpool front three is already one of the most fearsome attacks in the world. The only issue that the Reds have is fatigue, it is unrealistic to expect these players to play and perform every game, season in, season out. We are crying out for depth in attack, for rotation. Man City have two world class players in every position, we have one. So who would drop out of the front three to accommodate the Frenchman?
If Liverpool sign Mbappe one of the bravest ways to employ him would be to simply drop Roberto Firmino into the midfield. When the Reds signed Bobby he was an attacking midfielder, he still plays in a deep lying role even when he starts up front. Given the Brazilian’s defensive work rate, it would not be out of the question to give Mbappe the number nine role and drop Firmino into attacking midfield. By doing this we would have the fastest attack on the planet bar none and one of the best creative players in the world feeding them.
Whilst it may be a pipedream, if Liverpool sign Mbappe they would be truly unstoppable. Given the youthful nature of the squad and the prospects coming through, we could dominate for years to come. We just need it to happen, we need #Mbappe2020.
