Sunday sees Liverpool host Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League. It is the first time that the sides have met since the Reds defeated Spurs in the Champions League final in June. The final in Madrid was by no means a classic, an early penalty scored by Mo Salah essentially killed the game off as Jürgen Klopp’s side dug in and never looked likely to concede. The Premier League is an entirely different prospect to a one off final. Here are three things that Liverpool have to do to beat Spurs at Anfield:

Move the ball quickly

A lesson can be learned from Bayern Munich. The Bavarian giants dismantled Spurs in a 7-2 victory at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this month. Bayern moved the ball slickly and with pace around the Tottenham area, the Lilywhites’ defence was left scrambling. Just one look at the Reds third goal against Genk will show that Klopp’s side are capable of the same devastatingly quick passing. If we keep it moving, they will lack the organisation to cope.

Counter wide and long

Again, Bayern Munich exposed another huge frailty in the Spurs defence. Serge Gnabry was far too quick for them, he took up positions high and wide when out of possession, long balls behind the Tottenham defence were impossible for Mauricio Pochettino’s men to defend. They didn’t have the pace to keep up with him. Luckily for Liverpool, we boast two of the quickest wingers in the Premier League in Sadio Mane and Mo Salah, if they get on their bikes as soon as we win the ball, we can devastate them on the break.

Bully them in midfield

We are much stronger in midfield and we need to prove that. If we bully them in midfield, they will be forced to throw long balls up to Harry Kane. Typically, going long to Kane would work for Spurs, however, we have two of the best aerial defenders around in Joel Matip and Virgil van Dijk. The England striker will struggle to win much in the air with regularity, they will have to play through the middle to his feet. As long as Fabinho takes the likes of Christian Eriksen and Tanguy Ndombele out of the game, we can eliminate a lot of their attacking threat.
