Liverpool took on Genk in the Champions League in Wednesday night. The Reds made the trip to belgium as second in the group and finished the evening in the same spot. Jürgen Klopp’s side ran out 4-1 winners at the Luminus Arena thanks to goals from Sadio Mane and Mo Salah, as well as a brace from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. Speaking after the game, Robin van Persie was drooling over the second Oxlade-Chamberlain goal.

It was a hit and miss display from the Reds. The visitors took the lead after just two minutes when Oxlade-Chamberlain swept an unstoppable effort into the bottom corner. However, the hosts looked threatening on the break, their towering forward Paul Onuachu proved difficult to deal with, as did their long balls over the top. Liverpool got away with one after Genk had a goal ruled out for a narrow offside decision. The Reds looked bright throughout the game but not everything was coming off, however, bursts of brilliance proved vital.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s second goal was a thing of beauty. In the 56th minute Naby Keita dinked a delightful ball into the box to find Roberto Firmino, the Brazilian turned and caressed the ball into The Ox’s feet on the edge of the 18. The England midfielder nonchalantly stabbed at the ball with the outside of his boot to send the ball in off the bar, the keeper helpless.

Speaking on BT Sport after the game, Robin van Persie was drooling over the second Oxlade-Chamberlain, he said “I can watch this a hundred times, it’s so beautiful”. The Dutchman played with The Ox at Arsenal and recalled that whilst there he knew that the Reds midfielder “was one of them that had the potential to be a top player”.

It’s no surprise that Robin van Persie loved Oxlade-Chamberlain goal, it showed all the deftness and instinct that the former Arsenal and Man United striker was famed for. Fingers crossed The Ox can maintain his form.
