Adrian was a revelation for Liverpool this season. The Spaniard arrived at Anfield on a free transfer from West Ham expecting to play second fiddle to Alisson Becker for the season, maybe starting cup matches along the way. However, an injury to the world’s best keeper on the opening day of the Premier League season meant that Adrian was thrust into the lineup a lot sooner than expected. James Milner and Jürgen Klopp have praised Adrian for his professional attitude upon the return of Alisson to the starting lineup.
Alisson Becker pulled up lame with a calf injury in August when the Reds got their domestic campaign underway against newly promoted Norwich. The Brazilian was missing for two months as he recovered his fitness. Adrian conceded just 6 goals in his 8 games in the Premier League during his tenure. The Spaniard pulled off some magnificent saves whilst starting in goal for the Reds, including an absolute worldie against Napoli. Since Alisson’s full recovery, Adrian has been relegated back to the substitute bench, his first game out of the side being against Manchester United.
During their pre-match press conference, broadcast live on Liverpool’s YouTube channel, ahead of the Champions League tie with Genk, James Milner and Jürgen Klopp praised for Adrian due his professional attitude when being replaced. The gaffer said that goalkeeper took his dropping from the first team “calm, professional”, whilst Milner said that he did a “fantastic” job, adding that he “can’t say enough” about the character and performance of the goalkeeper.
Kopites are thankful for Adrian. Previously, a long term injury to Alisson was unthinkable, now it is just a minor inconvenience that we know we can get through with a terrific backup waiting in the wings.
