Alexander-Arnold ruled out of Genk game - who should start instead?

The Scouser in our team has been ruled out of the trip to Genk. Liverpool make the comparatively short trip to Belgium in the Champions League on Wednesday. The Reds are currently second in the group with three points, Genk lie bottom with none. Respected Liverpool reporter James Pearce has reported that Trent Alexander-Arnold will miss the Genk tie due to a virus. Who should replace him at right back?

James Milner

Mr. Dependable. The versatile workhorse that is James Milner has filled in at both full back positions for the Reds during his time at Anfield. He possesses the stamina, passing ability and defensive nouse to put in a shift at right back. Liverpool have an incredibly dynamic style of play that asks a lot of their wing backs, Milner is Jürgen Klopp’s most physically fit player, making him ideal to maraud up and down the flank in Belgium.

Joe Gomez

Gomez is no stranger to the right back slot at Liverpool. The England international has played there a number of times throughout his Anfield career. Whilst he doesn’t offer the offensive capability of Alexander-Arnold or James Milner, he is much more defensively sound than the pair of them. With the Englishman desperate for a place back in the side, 90 minutes at full back may be the ideal way to get himself back in the side. However, with Joel Matip also missing – he may well be needed at centre back instead.

Jürgen has a big decision on his hands. With Matip also ruled out, playing Gomez at right back would force the German’s hand into starting either Dejan Lovren or Fabinho at centre half.
