Today sees Liverpool visit Old Trafford in circumstances that would have been unimaginable just a few years ago. The Reds arrive in Lancashire as league leaders, clear by eight points, whilst the hosts languish in 14th place. There has been a massive turning of the tide in the grand old rivalry. Jürgen Klopp’s side are strong favourites for the game today, if Liverpool win, it would be an historic victory at Old Trafford.

The Reds haven’t won at Manchester United since March 2014. Considering the Reds rise under Jürgen Klopp and the Red Devils demise under whomever is unlucky enough to be in the dugout at the time, this is an extraordinary record that the Manchester side have managed to maintain.

When Sir Alex Ferguson arrived at Man United, he vowed to knock Liverpool off their perch. The Scotsman, unfortunately, did so with great success. United dominated English football for nearly two decades. Since Fergie’s retirement, United have been a shadow of the club that they were whilst their legendary manager was in charge. Noisy neighbours Man City have capitalised on the decline of fortunes at United.

A Liverpool win at Old Trafford would be an historic victory as it would be the symbolic confirmation that Liverpool have reclaimed their spot ahead of their Lancashire rivals. Man United can finish the day just one point above the relegation zone, Liverpool eight points clear at the top of the table. The Reds are favourites to win the league, United will struggle to even make the top six.

It is about time that Liverpool reclaimed their effing perch that Sir Alex knocked them off, a convincing victory at Old Trafford today would achieve that.
