Before the international break, Liverpool extended their consecutive win streak to 17 straight victories as they beat Leicester City 2-1 at Anfield. The Reds went ahead thanks to a well taken goal from Sadio Mane before James Maddison equalised late in the second half. Mane won an injury time penalty which was converted by James Milner to seal the 3 points for the Reds. Jürgen Klopp has hit back at jibes that Liverpool didn’t deserve their win over Leicester City.
The Reds travel to Man United this weekend and Jürgen has held his pre-match press conference ahead of the fixture, the gathering was broadcast live on the Liverpool YouTube channel. The German gaffer told the media “I really liked the Leicester game. I didn’t understand that people said we didn’t deserve to win”. Klopp has a point, the Reds had the larger share of possession and registered 18 shots to Leicester’s 2 – the visitors scored with their only shot on target, whilst Liverpool managed 8 shots on target.
Jürgen continued, “We were lucky in the moment to get the penalty but the game was 100% Liverpool. They had a lot of quality but we deserved to win”. When you are gunning for a Premier League title, you need luck. The Reds were only lucky in their penalty in that it was fortuitous for Liverpool that the Leicester City man made such a thoughtless, clumsy challenge in the box with such little time remaining in the game.
Leicester City are arguably the toughest opponent that the Reds have faced in the league so far, to perform as well as they did was a great achievement and the win was thoroughly deserved. If Klopp’s side replicate the Leicester City performance against Man United then Sunday will prove a routine victory.
