Liverpool x 07/08 Man United combined XI.

This week there was much said about the fact that Danny Mills selected a combined Liverpool – Man United 11 that didn’t include a single player from the Red Devils. It is hard to argue with the pundit, this is the best Reds side in modern memory and the worst United side since before Sir Alex Ferguson. We’ve decided to go for a harder task, a Liverpool – 07/08 Man United combined XI. The 2007/08 season saw Man United win the Champions League and Premier League.

Goalkeeper – Alisson

This was a tough call, United legend Edwin van der Sar holds the record for consecutive clean sheets in the Premier League (14) but Alisson offers more due to his superior ball distribution.

Right back – Trent Alexander-Arnold

A bold call. Trent gets in ahead of United legend Gary Neville (who only made 1 sub appearance in 07/08) because the Scouser holds the record for the most assists in a Premier League season.

Centre back – Rio Ferdinand

After much deliberation, Rio gets in ahead of Nemanja Vidic – mainly because of how often Fernando Torres turned the Serbian inside out.

Centre back – Virgil van Dijk

Of course the Premier League’s greatest ever defender gets in.

Left back – Andy Robertson

Another controversial call, Robbo edges out Patrice Evra as the Scotsman is more effective on the front foot than the United icon was.

Centre midfield – Paul Scholes

One of the best passers of the ball that football has ever seen with a long shot on him to boot. Scholes walks into this side.

Centre midfield – Fabinho

The Brazilian is the best defensive midfielder in the world at the minute. Paired with Scholes, Fabinho would give the United man more license to roam forward.

Left wing – Sadio Mane

Yes. Sadio Mane over Ryan Giggs. The Senegalese winger is a much more modern and deadly prospect than the United legend.

Attacking midfield – Cristiano Ronaldo

CR7 is an incredibly versatile player. Ronaldo simply has to be in this side but he can’t dislodge Mo Salah.

Right wing – Mo Salah

The Egyptian king holds the record for the most goals in a Premier League season, enough said.

Striker – Wayne Rooney

As much as he hates us and we hate him, Rooney is a legendary striker that would be hard to leave out of any side and he finishes our Liverpool – 07/08 Man United combined XI.
