This weekend Liverpool face bottom half opposition as they visit Man United at Old Trafford. The Reds are strong favourites against the once great side as Jürgen Klopp’s team currently sit 8 points clear at the top of the Premier League table. Before the international break, Liverpool edged past Leicester City at Anfield. The Reds needed a last minute James Milner penalty to extend their lead at the top. The win was marred by a horror challenge on Mo Salah by Hamza Choudhury. The Egyptian was brought down by a cynical tackle from the Foxes midfielder, with the young Leicester player landing heavily on the ankle of the Liverpool winger. Despite him reportedly fit to return this weekend, Liverpool should drop Mo Salah to prevent further risk of injury.
Man United are in miserable form at the minute. The Red Devils are languishing in 12th place after losing 1-0 to Newcastle United before the international break. The loss at St.James’ Park came hot on the heels of an embarrassing 0-0 against AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is under immense pressure at the minute and has had to face up to a lengthy injury list. Many of his absentees are in contention for the weekend, including Paul Pogba, Luke Shaw and Anthony Martial.
With United performing so far below par this year and Salah having sustained an injury that forced him off against Leicester, we shouldn’t risk our Egyptian king against bottom half opposition. Resting Mo against the Red Devils would give a big game opportunity to Divock Origi, a striker with a penchant for scoring in big games – he netted against Newcastle, Barcelona and Everton last season. We should drop Mo Salah in order to keep him fresh for the tougher task of Tottenham Hotspur the following week.
