Alisson Becker is set to return to the Liverpool lineup after the international break. The Brazilian has been out of action since sustaining a calf injury against Norwich on teh opening day of the season. During his absence Adrian has stepped into his shoes as his deputy, the Spaniard has been hugely impressive between the sticks for Liverpool. Despite his strong form, Adrian doesn’t offer everything that Alisson offers to the Reds. The Liverpool defence will look much stronger with Alisson back in goal.
One of the key things that Becker offers the team is faith. The Liverpool back line are more likely to force an attacker into shooting when the Brazilian is in goal as they have faith in him to stop the effort. Watch back any Liverpool game from last season and you will see how often Virgil van Dijk has shepherded an attacker down a blind alley wherein their only option is to shoot from an impossible angle.
When you take the Brazilian out of the side, the defence feel they have to do more work as they don’t have the same keeper to rely on. This is no slight on Adrian, he is just competing with the best goalkeeper in the world at the minute. With the defence feeling they have to make the tackle or block the shot, they are more easily exposed by attackers, a case in point for this is Virgil van Dijk uncharacteristically lunging in against Red Bull Salzburg, he was turned inside out for their first goal as a result.
The Liverpool defence will look much more assured when Alisson is back. We’re already 8 points ahead, who knows how much further he can take us?
