Dirk Kuyt has hailed the “mental skill” of Virgil van Dijk after the Dutchman made an error against Fulham before the international break.
Caught underneath a sliced clearance from James Milner, van Dijk attempted a cushioned backwards header to Alisson but Ryan Babel pounced on the loose ball and scored for the Cottagers.
Ultimately, the error didn’t lead to any dropped points as Sadio Mane won a penalty for the Reds which James Milner coolly converted.
“Virgil is the type of player who has his own style. Very classy and a real confident player. Every human sometimes makes small mistakes,” Milner said.
“But what was very special to me was that after the mistake against Fulham, he just kept playing. He got straight back to his level and that’s a great mental skill.”
Van Dijk is the favourite to win the 2019 PFA Player of the Year award ahead of Raheem Sterling, who has been in terrific form for Manchester City this season.
The Englishman has lead the charge for the Citizens recently and has been vital to his side closing the gap and overtaking Liverpool in the title race.
If Pep Guardiola’s men are to be named back to back champions, a lot of the credit will go to Sterling. Having said that, he hasn’t been as consistently amazing like Virgil van Dijk has.
