Liverpool centre-back Joel Matip has been spectacular in the Reds’ defence for the past year. The 28-year-old capitalised on the injury of Joe Gomez to claim his starting spot and has never let it go.
Matip’s performances have earned universal praise and made him immovable from the Liverpool first-team.
However, an injury has forced the defender out of tonight’s game at Anfield, providing Gomez with a rare opportunity to win back his place from the Cameroon international.
The 22-year-old had looked brilliant at the start of last season and was the preferred option to partner Virgil van Dijk. However, his season was cut short by injury and Matip stepped in with great success. So much so that, since returning, Gomez has been largely frozen out of Jurgen Klopp’s side.
Speaking about his lack of game time Gomez said. “Obviously I have not been playing and obviously every footballer wants to be playing.

“At the same time, I understand that we are the European champions and the lads are doing very well at the minute so all I can do is keep my head down, keep working hard in training and keep waiting for the right time.”
Now may just be the right time for the young centre-back. Matip is sidelined tonight and may also miss Saturday’s clash with Leicester.
This provides Gomez with a small window to impress Klopp and potentially win back his starting spot in this Liverpool team.
