Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder is well aware of the scale of the task his side faces this weekend. The South Yorkshire side are set to host European champions and league leaders Liverpool. Whilst the two side’s gap of 12 points doesn’t seem too dramatic of a separation, the teams are worlds apart. The Reds have started the season with 6 wins from 6 and are on a 15 game winning streak in the league, this form comes on the back of a 6th European Cup victory over the summer.
Chris Wilder has given his pre-match press conference ahead of the two sides’ meeting. His comments have highlighted the gulf in stature between the teams and proves Liverpool’s status as the league’s biggest club. During his press conference, available on the official Sheffield United site, he said that he has warned his players against getting “starry eyed” and has had to order players against “swapping shirts”.
The fact that the Blades boss has had to address shirt swapping with his players is incredibly telling. This is a Premier League fixture. Sheffield United are no small side, they have been around the top echelons of English football for decades. Sheffield is a massive and proud city, much like Liverpool. Chris Wilder having to warn his players against souvenir hunting against the league leaders highlights just how revered the current Reds side is. If another Premier League team want to grab one of our players’ shirts at the end of the game, they must believe that Jürgen Klopp has put together a team for the history books. If the Reds manage to continue their winning streak, then the history books aren’t far off.
