Philippe Coutinho’s transfer to Barcelona will have a divisive place in Liverpool history. On one hand, the Reds lost a talisman, their baby faced assassin, and they did so in spectacular fashion as the Brazilian forced through a move with nefarious means. On the other hand, Liverpool received a gargantuan fee for the playmaker and reinvested the money wisely, using his £142m fee to bring in Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker to shore up a famously leaky defence. It was also quite nice to see his move to Barcelona transpire to be such a disastrous mistake.
The Brazilian has subsequently been moved on to Bayern Munich on loan. The former Liverpool star is finally finding his feet in Germany, a sight that will surely put a smile on the face of Jürgen Klopp as the Reds’ gaffer messaged Coutinho to express his delight that he had found himself in the Bundesliga.
Over the weekend, Bayern comfortably dispatched Koln 4-0. Robert Lewandowski bagged 2 goals in 48 minutes before Coutinho added to the scoreline from the spot. Lewandowski’s decision to give the ex-Barcelona midfielder the penalty was a nice touch and a show of confidence in a player struggling to hit his former heights.
The little magician’s excellent game didn’t stop there and he proceeded to assist Ivan Perisic for Bayern’s 4th goal of the game.
Despite the manner of his move and the heartache it caused, it is nice to see a world class talent performing again. He was a joy to watch at times for the Reds and hopefully he can continue to get his career back on track at Bayern. Cheers for helping us sort out the defence though Phil.
