Liverpool paraded their best youngsters on Wednesday night. The Reds went away to MK Dons in the League Cup 3rd round and beat the hosts comfortably with goals from James Milner and Ki-Jana Hoever. There were starts for Rhian Brewster, Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott alongside the goalscoring Dutchman, Hoever. With the youth very impressive during the game, Elliott striking the post twice, Curtis Jones picking up the man of the match award, Liverpool’s young guns have every right to be proud of themselves.
One player in particular is hoping to build on his impressive display. Ki-Jana Hoever scored his first Liverpool goal last night, becoming the Reds’ youngest ever non-British scorer. He told Liverpool FC’s official site he hopes his display earns him further game time, saying “you hope the manager starts you in the next game again and gives you minutes.”
The Reds’ next game is Sheffield United at the weekend. We don’t believe that the 17 year old Dutch defender is suggesting he oust Trent Alexander-Arnold, he is much more likely referring to Liverpool’s tie with Arsenal in the next round of the cup. The goalscorer may well get his wish as Arsenal’s noisy North London neighbours Tottenham Hotspur visit Anfield just 2 days before the 4th round League Cup tie.
The Ki-Jana Hoever goal shows that he definitely has a bright future at Anfield. His intelligence to spot the opportunity, his athleticism to win the aerial battle and the technique to hammer the ball home were all outstanding. If he is able to continue building on last night’s display then he won’t be limited to cup games in future.
