Liverpool transfer rumours are 10 a penny, especially because the Reds had a nearly completely silent summer transfer window. The only arrivals at Melwood were two young guns and two seasoned keepers to give backup to Alisson Becker. With Divock Origi out injured, Liverpool have just Rhian Brewster in reserve to cover the striker position. The wings are covered solely by Xherdan Shaqiri. Jürgen Klopp needs investment and January could be just the right time.
Luckily for Michael Edwards and co, the cup tied rule in the Champions League has been abolished. This means that the Reds would be able to go after any of their main targets without being restricted from playing them in European competition. This would make players such as Jadon Sancho more viable for a mid season move.
A Liverpool transfer mid season would be true to form. In the January 2018 window, the Reds signed the colossal centre back Virgil van Dijk. Of course, this move was partly motivated by the influx of cash from the sale of Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona. However, with the Anfield side having not spent big over the summer, they will likely have the flexibility to buy without selling in January.
The Reds are definitely planning something. Nobody wins the Champions League for the first time in a decade then just rests on their laurels. One can only assume that the tying up of Liverpool’s Nike deal has led to a stalling in the transfer market. As the reported megabucks kit deal will likely have an effect on transfer policy – not least because of the huge financial package the club will receive – the Reds may have postponed potential signings until the agreement is wrapped up.
