There is a longstanding conspiracy theory that Martin Tyler utterly hates Liverpool. The theory is a result of years of downright lacklustre commentary around Reds games in comparison to other sides he covers. One historic case in point is when Anthony Martial scored a late goal against Liverpool for Manchester United in 2015; Martin Tyler could hardly hide his excitement, letting out a roaring “OH YEEEEEEES”.
On Sunday, Liverpool continued their winning streak with a 2-1 away victory at Stamford Bridge. Tyler was fuming about it. He announced Trent Alexander-Arnold’s top bin belter with all the enthusiasm of a man receiving a present he didn’t like in an office secret santa he didn’t want to be a part of. Further to that, when Mason Mount was justifiably called offside in the build up to Chelsea’s equaliser, he was heartbroken. He dedicated most of the remainder of the half to a lamentation of VAR and the offside rule. It was unprofessional nonsense. Later on in the game he tried to stir up a scene about Jordan Henderson handling the ref – if our skipper had illegally grabbed the official, do you not think we would have heard the Chelsea fans screaming? They appealed for absolutely everything else. Tyler tried to instigate an incident, a talking point. He pulled up the replay and determined there to have been no foul play – shock horror.
Twitter has reacted to Martin Tyler’s bizarre display of contempt for Liverpool.
Over in the USA, a fan thought that the commentator acted as if he had some sombre news to read as Trent scored.
Another Red thought that the man sounded on the brink of bawling.
Leanne Prescott felt that his emotions were glaringly obvious after the disallowed goal.
Others thought that he took up a crusade on the back of Liverpool getting the right decision, pointing out how nonsensical his position was.
Whilst Kopites abroad pointed out how much better they have it, boasting the legendary Peter Drury in their ears for the big games.
