Chelsea fans were at it again over the weekend, heaping embarrassment on themselves. Liverpool went away to Stamford Bridge and extended their winning streak to 15 Premier League victories in a row. The Blues fans were in fine voice throughout the game, berating the referee for correct decisions and for a solid management of the game. Of course, they laid into him and the other officials after their first goal was disallowed for offside because…well…Mason Mount was offside. However, we must remember that these are Chelsea fans and therefore only about 10% of them share footballing DNA with us – the rest started watching the sport or supporting the team in the mid 2000s. They don’t know any better.
It was before the game though that they really brought shame on the club. Chelsea fans thought it appropriate to unfurl a massive Eden Hazard banner before the game.

I thought that they were beginning to get over their small club mentality, clearly not. Eden Hazard, their talismanic forward, joined Real Madrid for an initial £89m over the summer. For years he had tried to force the move. This season he finally got his wish and got out of Stamford Bridge. To unfurl a banner for a player that forced a move out of your club is like buying your partner dinner to say thank you for cheating on you. Sure, we have Fernando Torres banners out now and then, we weren’t bringing them out immediately after he moved to London though. Hopefully Chelsea fans will respect themselves a bit more in future.
