Alisson Becker could go down in history this season. The Brazilian goalkeeper is hotly tipped to win FIFA’s Yachine trophy at the Ballon d’Or ceremony this year. It is the inaugural season for the award which is named after historic Russian goalie Lev Yashin. The Eastern European legend remains the only goalkeeper to have won the Ballon d’Or. This new trophy will celebrate the best in the world between the sticks as they nearly never get a look in to the main prize. Allison’s teammate Virgil van Dijk is odds on favourite to win the Ballon d’Or this year.
Becker has been a revelation since signing for the Reds in 2018. After being stunned by an irresistible Liverpool attack whilst playing for Roma he joined the side merely months later – Jürgen Klopp’s side lost a Champions League final inbetween due to some atrocious goalkeeping. The Brazilian was the final piece of Jürgen’s defensive jigsaw puzzle. He instilled a calmness that we haven’t seen at the back since Pepe Reina’s early years at the club. Whilst Virgil van Dijk had gone some way to making Liverpool as solid as they are now, he needed a world class pair of gloves behind him.
Having won the UEFA men’s goalkeeper of the year award last month, he is nailed on to be the first recipient of the Yachine trophy. It would be an historic moment for the keeper and his club, winning the first ever Yachine trophy. It is an award he thoroughly deserves thanks to his match winning performances on the way to Liverpool’s 6th European Cup in Madrid.
