Steve Bruce has held his press conference ahead of Liverpool v Newcastle this weekend. The Tyneside team have won just once in their opening four games, their sole victory coming away to Tottenham Hotspur; a surprise win that Bruce is hoping to emulate when his team takes to the field on Merseyside.
The former Sheffield Wednesday manager has said that his side will “see if [they] can pull off a shock”, his conference comments have been reported by the Chronicle. The local manager (born just 16 miles from Newcastle), is impressed by Liverpool’s side, saying that they are a “really really honest and genuine group of players”.
This stellar character that Jürgen Klopp has instilled in his side has been critical to Liverpool’s success. The value of this positive attitude is not lost on Bruce, who added: “When you’ve got that, you’re capable of doing anything.”
Liverpool are widely backed to trounce their North Eastern opponents this weekend. The Reds have been in unstoppable form this year, picking up 12 points from a possible 12, brushing aside top opposition such as Arsenal along the way.
The scale of the task is something that the Newcastle boss is all too aware of. He told the gathered media “They have not lost there for two and a half years, they are the European champions, we will have to catch them on an off day.”
“Up front they’re as good as I’ve seen,” Bruce continued. With Sadio Mane and Mo Salah both fighting fit having been free from international duty, Newcastle are sure to see the very best of the attack he rightly fears.
