Anderlecht boss, Manchester City hero and reckless tackler Vincent Kompany is set to captain his former side again. The Belgian will take the armband for Man City in a legends game against former Premier League players. The full squads for the Kompany testimonial game at The Etihad have been announced. The Blues side includes 2 former Liverpool players and one of our current crop. The game is in aid of Tackle4MCR, a charity tackling local homelessness.
Following his departure from Manchester, Kompany became player-manager at his old side Anderlecht. The Premier League winning captain oversaw Anderlecht’s worst ever start to a season, opening with 2 defeats and 2 draws. The centre back has since stepped down as manager.
Craig Bellamy will line up Man City legends tonight. The fiery Welshman had spells 2 spells with Liverpool and 1 with the Citizens. During his time at Maine Road he scored 15 goals in 51 games, making use of his electric pace and canon of a left foot. Bellamy will be most remembered at Liverpool for allegedly attacking John Arne Riise with a golf club because he wouldn’t sing karaoke with him.
Dietmar Hamann is in the Blues legends squad for the game. The lanky German was a general of the Liverpool midfield for 7 years and pivotal to the Istanbul comeback. Following his stretch at Liverpool he began winding down his career with 3 years at Man City before moving to MK Dons.
James Milner is the divisive inclusion for Kompany’s team. Some City fans have voiced opposition to his inclusion, others have been embarrassed by the poor reaction. The Yorkshireman left the Etihad on a free after making 203 appearances for the club, picking up 2 league titles and 2 FA Cups along the way.
