Taking a look at Liverpool’s three captains, each player brings a different aspect to the role. However, which star deserves to be the number one choice?

Jordan Henderson

Henderson was awarded the armband back in 2015 and has been at Liverpool longer than any other player. Arguably, this gives him an advantage as Henderson is more familiar with the team’s game play. He is also more likely to provide goal-scoring opportunities for the front three, successfully providing 122 through balls and over a thousand accurate-long passes (Premier League stats).

Milner has the most experience out of the three with nearly twenty years and brings a new level of professionalism to the squad. His presence on the field would make his teammates feel a lot calmer as he has a 78% success rate in countering opponents moves (Premier League stats). He is often seen as the fittest member of the squad which shows him to be the most consistent and reliable out of the three.

Van Dijk

Former captain of Southampton, Van Dijk is a fortress in defence. Out of 123 Premier League appearances, he has been involved in 68 wins and holds nearly fifty clean sheets (Premier League stats). He is shown to hold his own under pressure, winning 73% of his duels (Premier League stats). We cannot forget how Van Dijk’s constant presence has also helped Liverpool win the Champions League and the Super Cup.

Result:

It is a tough call, but I would put my faith in Milner due to his experience and his defensive talents.
