With rumours persisting that Liverpool are on the verge of a record breaking kit deal, it is time to get excited. Liverpool’s Nike deal will be as important to the club’s dynasty project as Jürgen Klopp.
Sports supplying giants Nike are reportedly working on agreeing a kit deal with Liverpool that will surpass the £75m a year kit deal that Manchester United signed with Adidas back in 2014.
The Reds are already posting world-record profits and a Nike deal would only serve to pump more money into the Liverpool coffers, giving Michael Edwards – currently the world’s best sporting director – greater manoeuvrability in the transfer market.
Nike would expect marquee signings to make the deal worthwhile to them. We can also expect these signings to be Nike sponsored athletes. Liverpool have been heavily linked with Nike athletes Kylian Mbappe and Kai Havertz. With players like that, Klopp would be unstoppable.
Liverpool’s Nike deal would serve to give Edwards sway with top players as they would be nudged towards Anfield by their sponsors. If you think that sponsors don’t have that much influence over a player then you mustn’t be aware of how much money sponsors pay players – Forbes reported that Ronaldo could earn $1bn from Nike alone. For a billion quid, you would move house.
If Liverpool’s Nike deal can provide a consistent stream of income and access to top players, they could be as important to Liverpool’s success as Klopp. We all love the big German but even the greatest workman needs tools.
