Simon Mignolet is staying at Liverpool, according to reports – a welcome surprise for the team.
The Times claims that Jurgen Klopp values Mignolet ‘attitude and approach’ since losing his role as first-choice.
Mignolet first slipped behind Loris Karius in the pecking order, an arguably poor choice in the end. But there is no doubting that Alisson Becker is Liverpool’s no. 1 choice.
And so it was thought that the Belgian would be off this summer. Reports from the likes of the Daily Mail have said that Liverpool even set an asking price: £15m.
Mignolet has been a fantastic professional this season, though. And, when your first-choice goalkeeper is undisputedly so, that’s a valuable trait for the backup.
To the point where if you can keep him at the club, it’s beneficial to do so.
It would be difficult to find a replacement – the club would have to consider the ‘boring option’ of a reliable goalkeeper who won’t kick up a fuss.
But they already have that. Thus, if they can keep hold of him, it prevents waste of time and the risk of the new guy not being an able replacement.
No matter what you think of Mignolet between the sticks, him staying is the best result for Liverpool.
