The Telegraph report that Liverpool duo James Milner and Joel Matip are set to be offered new contracts at Anfield.

The pair have been integral to Liverpool’s outstanding form this season and look set to be rewarded with new deals.

Milner, despite his age, remains incredibly fit and provides experience and class in the middle of midfield.

Matip has fought his way up the centre-back pecking order this season to form a solid partnership with van Dijk.

Chris Bascombe writes: “Milner has become integral to Liverpool’s revival under Jürgen Klopp and although he has turned 33, and still has a year remaining on his current deal, he will be retained until at least 2021.

“Matip is in the same situation with a year left on his deal.

“He too will be offered fresh terms having reasserted himself in the second part of this season to flourish alongside Virgil van Dijk.”

The news that two of Liverpool’s stand-out performers further committing their futures to the club is great news.

James Milner has become a fan favourite since he signed on a free from Manchester City in 2015.

His iron will, undying desire and commitment and consistent performances in a number of positions have endeared him to the Kop.

These qualities have also made him indispensable to Jürgen Klopp since he took over as Liverpool manager.

Joel Matip is another player who has made himself a bit of a cult hero on the Kop.

Quiet and unassuming in character, Matip doesn’t shy away from responsibility on the pitch and has been superb this season.

He’s had to be patient but took his chance with both hands when Joe Gomez was unfortunately injured.

Many fans worried that Matip wouldn’t be up to the task, but he has grown and matured alongside van Dijk.

They’ve both become very reliable lieutenants for Klopp during his time at Anfield, and their new deals are great news.
