Portuguese outlet Record reports that Liverpool, along with Manchester City, are interested in 21-year-old defender Ferro. Should it come to fruition, the arrival of Ferro would surely mean the end of Joel Matip or Dejan Lovren.
Francisco Reis Ferreira, known as Ferro, currently plays for Benfica where he reportedly has a 100m euro release clause, claims the Mirror.

Ferro has only just broken into the Benfica team but his performances have caught the eye. Liverpool’s eye is an interesting one to catch too.
There are already four centre-back options in the first-team. One is already a young centre back in Joe Gomez, while Virgil van Dijk is a mainstay. That leaves Matip and Lovren as the most expendable if Liverpool do want to move for Ferro.

You can easily see the benefit of having Ferro and Gomez developing together, led by Van Dijk. What better way to prepare for life after the 27-year-old Dutchman than two highly rated 21-year-olds?
And if that is the plan, there isn’t much room for Matip and Lovren. The former is the same age as Van Dijk but fourth-choice, while Lovren is nearly 30 and 3rd choice.

If Liverpool really are looking at young defenders, the two of them may just have until the end of the season to prove why they are the one who should stay.
