A report in Spain names Liverpool as one of 14 clubs interested in Atletico Mineiro’s Emerson.
Mundo Deportivo make the claim. The report itself is primarily about Barcelona’s interest but they do name the exhausting list of others.
Shakhtar, Juventus, Arsenal, Internazionale, Sampdoria, Sassuolo, Borussia Dortmund, Lille, Watford, FC Porto, Valencia & Real Betis join Liverpool and Barca in chasing Emerson, apparently.
Who is Emerson?
Emerson is a 20-year-old Brazilian right-back at Atletico Mineiro. The youngster only joined the club for the 2018 season but is reportedly in high demand.
Emerson only has 43 combined games in Brazil’s Serie A and the Paulista state league, however. He’s still mostly unproven, although he clearly has talent.
He’s athletic – both quick and strong – and capable of real moments of skill. Emerson has two senior goals but both showed different quality. The first was a long-range strike, the second a brilliant goal where he controlled a high ball, juggled it past a tackle, and lashed it into the far corner.
Emerson certainly looks promising – it’s no wonder there’s said to be interest.
Do Liverpool need Emerson?
Maybe. It all depends on the future of Trent Alexander-Arnold. They’re both the same age – a clear issue but only if Alexander-Arnold is to continue at right-back.
He began as a midfielder and there’s always the chance he’ll move back there. Should he, the spot opens up for a talented player to come in.
It’s difficult to believe that two 20-year-old right-backs would each get adequate time to develop if he doesn’t.
How likely is it?
It’s a tenuous link at best, really. Liverpool are said to be interested – but so are 13 other clubs.
The report is from a country with no link to either the club or the player, too, which usually isn’t a strong sign. That’s not to say that they haven’t spoken to someone in the know while looking into Barca’s interest, however.
Liverpool don’t have a desperate need for Emerson, either. There is a scenario where it would make sense but it’s entirely hypothetical.
Getting a shirt with Emerson on the back may be a bit premature, all things considered.
