Liverpool fans have responded with mixed feelings over the decision to hand a new long-term contract to Jordan Henderson which will keep him at the club until 2023.

On Monday afternoon, Liverpool Football Club announced that they had extended Jordan Henderson’s contract, with reports in the British media claiming his terms will only expire in 2023.

Upon signing the new deal, he said: “There is no other place in the world I would rather play football. I want to be here for as long as I can be.

“I’m so privileged to have been a part of this club for so long, and hopefully even longer now.”

The skipper was impressive last season as he helped guide his side to the Champions League final, with one of his best displays for the club coming against AS Roma in the home leg of the semi-final.

Yet, there are still questions over his long-term suitability to playing regularly for Jurgen Klopp after Fabinho signed for the club and Gini Wijnaldum made a stunning start to the season as a no.6.

Some fans have expressed their disappointment at Henderson being offered a new contract while others believe the move from Liverpool to make perfect sense as far as keeping the camp happy is concerned.

There is definitely a divide in Liverpool’s fanbase where Henderson is concerned and while I don’t think he is the best no.6 at the club, with Fabinho definitely ahead of him in the pecking order, having Hendo as a backup holding midfielder is great.

I don’t think he should have been given another five-year contract but Klopp knows best and may well be protecting his value so the club can sell him for £20-30m in three years’ time.
