After Jöel Matip limped off against Borussia Dortmund on Sunday evening, Jürgen Klopp provided an update on the centre-half’s injury.
While there were several positives to take from Liverpool’s disappointing 3-1 loss against Borussia Dortmund at the Bank of America Stadium, there was one major negative in that Matip was forced to exit the game through injury.
When the Cameroonian limped off, he appeared to be holding his left thigh and there were immediate fears that he had suffered a repeat of the injury that kept him sidelined for a large portion of the 2017/18 season.
Klopp, however, has allayed these fears with the update he offered to supporters after the game in the US.
Jürgen Klopp told his post-match press conference: “It’s not the same injury. It’s another muscle – it looks like, hopefully, only a little tear.
“We will see, but we cannot say anymore it now. It is of course the most negative thing about the day. It’s not cool. Things like this can happen, but you don’t want them to.
“Maybe tomorrow or the day after tomorrow we will know more, but in this moment we only know that it was too painful for him to carry on.”
Matip was favourite to partner Virgil van Dijk on the opening day of Liverpool’s Premier League season against West Ham but any kind of injury will threaten his chances of even making the squad with just 20 days until the start of the new campaign.
