Liverpool in talks to sign Euro 2016 winner - could cost the club £26 million

According to Portuguese newspaper A Bola, via the Metro, Liverpool representatives have flown to Lisbon to negotiate a move for Sporting’s William Carvalho.

With the January transfer window nearing its end, rumours as to what will happen in the next week are flying left, right and centre. The latest story pertaining to Liverpool is slightly less ridiculous than the one indicating Dimitri Payet could join Liverpool.

It would seem as though, if Portuguese outlet A Bola is to be believed and I’m not sure they are, Liverpool are keen on signing Euro 2016 winner William Carvalho. With Jürgen Klopp reportedly interested in beefing up his midfield, it’s easy to see why Carvalho would be one to be linked.

Geoffrey Kondogbia has been linked in the past but nothing ever materialised.

Carvalho has played for Sporting 136 times but has been continuously linked with a move to the Premier League with Arsenal often tipped as the club to take him on board. A Bola, via the Metro, claim that Liverpool are already in contact with Sporting director Bruno de Carvalho over a possible move for Carvalho.

If Liverpool are serious in their pursuit of the 24-year-old midfield enforcer, then FSG will need to be ready to pay up. It’s reported that Sporting want a fee in the region of £26 million but if Carvalho can do what Javier Mascherano did in his days at Liverpool, then the money will be well spent.

Klopp has previously mentioned how he won’t spend on players unless he feels there value will reflect both in the short and the long term. Liverpool aren’t looking for stop-gap solutions, so if there are any doubts surrounding Carvalho’s suitability then it’s unlikely a move will be arranged.
