Right, um, the Metro are reporting that a move for Dimitri Payet has opened up for Liverpool, amongst others.
This isn’t a joke, no.
Oh wait, there was a catch of sorts. The report from the Metro did stipulate that if either of Liverpool, Chelsea or Manchester United are interested, then “the path to signing Dimitri Payet has cleared.”
How did Kristian Walsh of the Liverpool ECHO put it? “So, that’s about as clear as mud, isn’t it?”
Dimitri Payet has caused such a stinking mess with his treatment of West Ham that even those who don’t particularly like the West Ham club feel partial towards them. The French international is running out of time to find a new club with just seven days left of the January transfer window.
It’s going to be a bit awkward if he can’t find a new club.
As much as Liverpool lack depth, Payet has shown that he is not a player that would put the club’s best interests first.
Liverpool have struggled to deal without key players throughout the season. The last time Coutinho, Lallana, Firmino and Mane all lined up together was in November and the Reds were top of the league at that point.
Jürgen Klopp has had to deal with injury to Coutinho and Lallana, Mane’s AFCON commitments and the Cameroon FA playing silly bugger over Jöel Matip’s international status.
Despite all of this, Payet is likely to be the last name on whatever January shopping list Klopp has or had.
